Since the driveway is shared between two houses, the area available to us for parking is limited and somewhat awkward. Over time, system parameters have presented which will allow parking for up to seven smaller or regular-sized vehicles off-street. A compact parking configuration has presented as necessary for success, as the cars must fit snugly.
This task can be a challenge, but one which needs to be met in order to make off-street parking work in this location. In order to offer the benefit of off-street parking, these guidelines need to be met. If they are too complicated, on-street parking is luckily available.
Parking in the driveway is on a first come, first park basis. Each person, as they arrive, should park in the highest of space available of the three spaces uphill from the stairs*. Backing in is a key component, as it reduces gravel migration downhill. Plus, it is much easier to get out the driveway if you are facing the street. Turning around anywhere within the driveway is not an option.
*with some exceptions
If parking on the street or having visitors, we encourage people to park far enough from the driveway entrance to leave enough visual setback so that people exiting the driveway can better see whether an oncoming vehicle is approaching. When parking on the street, please use the area in front of our house next to the laurel hedge. If you face north, this puts the passenger's seat into the bushes and the driver's seat on the street side, or on the curb side of Hendrick's Ridge.
